Brown Camp Lofts

The Brown Camp/Tone Lofts have been done for quite a long time.  These lofts were so ahead of their time that the developers couldn’t give the units away back in the late 90’s.  That amazes me, because this building was done top notch.

The Brown Camp Lofts are pretty much across the street from where the I Cubs play, Principal Park.  (or is it Sec Taylor Field?)  This location puts the building right along the river, the walking trails, and blocks from Court Ave District.  It’s really an awesome location, and during the summer quite a busy place.

The inside of the building is awesome.  They kept the old hardwood floors, and they’re old enough you don’t see anything like them anymore.  The hallway’s are very wide, and include a bike rack for storing your bike on each level.  (nice touch)

Each unit has very tall ceilings, and one thing that I loved about the property is that there are wood slats on the ceiling.  These slats give a really cool feeling to the lofts.

This building has a ton of character, and it blows me away that there was a day that people didn’t want to move into them.  Of course, that day was a long time ago, and Brown Camp is still viewed as one of the premier properties downtown, even after all the development that has taken place since this project was completed.

PROS:

Each unit has tons and tons of character

Exposed brick, old wood floors, huge windows, very very very tall ceilings.  (what else can you want?)

Location is great.  Right on the walking trails, river and you can catch a ball game from the rooftop deck.

CONS:

Building was finished in the late 90’s, and some of the design elements show that.

Tax abatement.  I’m not sure what the status is, but I do know that you aren’t getting a 10 year tax abatement here like you would in some of the other projects.

I loved the Brown Camp Lofts.  Tons of character, great layouts, and a superior location give this property everything it needs.  The people that built this were true visionaries.

Some close friends of mine live in the Tone Lofts and like you described, the units are absolutely gorgeous! We not only get to enjoy the atmosphere while inside their place, but the rooftop deck is great whether you’re there to soak up the sun or watch the Sec Taylor Stadium fireworks after a night game.

I worked on the BH&G and Country Home lofts for their showhouse in 2004 and I’m a huge fan.
