Des Moines Art Fest

The Art festival was a big success. My family and I joined the masses at Gateway Park to view the Art. What we found was a carnival atmosphere. There was music playing on several stages, and food venders. Can we do anything in Iowa without kettle corn and bbq? I also saw a number foods on a stick, and of course ice cream. I admit it–we were eating and drinking too. What’s an outdoor festival without food?

We saw some beautiful articles as we wandered around. The glass ware was marvelous, and some of the fiber work was outstanding. And of, course works of art in paint, metal, and wood. Too many to list here. It would take hours to really see it all. One of the artists was doing a mural made from small tiles that look like tiny abstracts. Very impressive. I had hoped to see the speed painter who pains with his hands, but he was there while we were. We also missed the sidewalk painter, but did see one of his works.

One of the things I really enjoyed was architectural antiques. This large building was filled with bites and pieces of everything from Stained glass to door knobs to tables. To many people a lot of it would would be trash, but to others–what finds. I’m afraid there was nothing there I couldn’t live without, but was such fun. There was also a tiny little girl that ‘Royal Ruler’ named a Lady. The tap on her shoulder with a sword thrilled her, and her parents.

The tall fairy lady was gracious enough to pose for me and other photographers.

Everyone seemed to be having a good time, but we also saw a few folks just relaxing and enjoying the best of summer. Crowds of people sat on the grass and listened to the music or had snacks.

Looked like half of Des Moines was there. I was also impressed by all the volunteers working. It takes tons of people to pull this off.

If you missed this festival this year, put it on your calendar for next year.
