Dos Rios Gets Reviewed
Were you one of the many wondering about Dos Rios? Just in time for weekend dining here’s a review done by our friends at The Des Moines Register.
Here’s a few highlights:
MENU: It’s as daring and seductive as a willful suitor, fearless in its quest to bowl us over. Tacos, chiles relleños and enchiladas share the menu with new-to-town choices, many conceived with unexpected dips and turns. Ever had a hearts-of-palm salad with diced pumpkin seeds? A chicken chop with chayote gratin, poblano peppers and red mole? Indeed, the great variety of sauces alone - including green mole, red mole, chimichurri, roasted tomatillo sauce, pipian verde sauce - will have most food-lovers dizzy and reeling with giddy anticipation.
Sounds good right?
THE COMEBACK: An order of the marvelously fresh and chunky guacamole - made tableside - got us right back on track, even if ours was made from less-than-alluring kitchen cart, utilitarian prep pans and all.
From there, most items ranged from good to “can you believe we’re eating this in Des Moines?” I can say for certain that I’ll never go here without ordering the Chile Relleño. No limp, mushed-out mess here - the fully intact chile pepper stood firm, thick with a sweet-savory mix of ground pork and raisins. Also not to be missed: Gorditas al Pastor - corn masa pockets filled with succulent pork shoulder.
Meat-lovers should consider the Fred Flintstone-sized chile-glazed beef rib; the less adventuresome will appreciate the fresh, simple, satisfying tacos. Skip, however, the Tortilla Soup - it tasted little better than a doctored-up concoction that started from a can.
That’s right, it’s official. You have plans tonight and they include dinner at Dos Rios!

Christina Says:
Can’t say enough about the wonderful service we always receive at Dos Rios. I highly recommend the Ensalada Cruda, very light with wonderful flavors. The Camarones Ajillo are spectacular. And the Chuletas de Puerco is INSANELY GOOD. Word to the wise… the Molcajete de Carne will actually feed an entire table of 4. Julio, our server, was kind enough to send home extra tortillas so we could enjoy the leftovers (which made lunch for both of us!). The one thing I wish I would see on the menu is a simple leche flan - not the flavored flan. Just a super rich, heavy slab of it with the caramelized sauce like my mom makes. I just can’t subscribe to the chocolate, orange, vanilla thing.
Oh, and do yourself a favor, ORDER THE GUACAMOLE! Save the spiced chips for the tres salsa and use the plain for the guac.

“Word to the wise… the Molcajete de Carne will actually feed an entire table of 4″ — AHHHHHHHH, thank you for telling me that, I was about to go there and order it for myself, I would have looked like a pig. The way this review is spelled out, I would have to print it off, and then try and match it up at the resturant.
