Downtown Des Moines Carnival

by Jo Hill

Lets go to the Carnival.  Where?  Downtown, of course.  Yes, we had a carnival downtown and I had to go and see if was like I remembered as a kid.  Much of it is the same as always.  What’s a carnival without eating. There are lots of places to buy Cotton Candy, corn dogs, popcorn, and soda.  As I looked around I saw a lot of the same old rides that have been around for years like the ferris wheel.  But this one seemed a little bigger and better.  There was also a tilt a whirl, merry go round, as well as other rides for same children.   The bumper cars are always popular with adults and both kids.

What really surprised me the most was the newer rides like the Fireball.  On this one the riders are upside down a lot.  Scary!  There were several other rides that spin and whirled and bounced up and down.  Al lit up with many, many bright lights.  Didn’t check them all out, but I saw what looked like fun houses and spook houses, as well as others.  Maybe something for everyone.

There were also things for the older ‘Kids’ also.  The young men were having a great time at the shooting gallery.  As I looked around kids and adults were having a good time.  Didn’t look to see when it was leaving, but if you enjoy doing something different–you may enjoy going to a carnival again, and pretending to be a kid again.
