Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market Week 2

by Jo Hill

This Saturday was the day when the families at the Farmer’s Market got to see first hand some of the equipment Des Moines uses to make our lives safer here in the city.

I always find it startling to see how well equipped our city is.  Unless you get the chance to see it in use, I doubt many people even think we have a bomb squad, but sitting on the bridge was the bomb squad van with a bomb suit and other equipment.

Another surprise was the mounted patrol.  I do not know where they are used, but I have seen them a time or two on the trails.  Today, I only saw one dog with an officer, but I do know that there are more then that.  The dog that was there today was not sure what he thought of the horses.  People he understands, but being a young dog, he was sure he needed to put them in their place even if they were much larger.  He calms at once after his handler spoke to him.   Another popular dog was there also.  McGruff was there making friends with the kids, and having his picture taken with them.   It was most interesting to watch member of police and fire department speaking with everyone and letting the children see they are not to be feared.

Sitting on the bridge with Des Moines Police logo on it was a very fancy car.  Looks to me that Des Moines gain was some felon’s loss.  I don’t know cars, but it didn’t look like standard issue to me.  Having lived downtown for almost two years I had seen some of this before, but am always glad to know our city is this well equipped.  And I love walking downtown and on the trails and seeing all the yellow shirts.  Since I and many others walk alone at times; I am always comforted by a bike patrol
officer  passing me with a smile.  I know from personal experience I can stop an officer and he will answer me.  I think we owe the officers our thanks, and respect.
