Downtown Des Moines Residents Share What They Love Part 3

Already on to part 3! If you missed parts 1, or 2, I’ve linked them for your review.

Where is the best place to hang out downtown?

  • Buzzard’s patio or The Continental
  • A room with a view!
  • IMAX Theater
  • Court Ave (heard this a lot)
  • The Lift
  • Anywhere downtown, especially my loft!
  • The Royal Mile
  • El Bait Shop
  • inPlay (yes, I’m still a kid!)
  • On Friday Nights Hessen Haus!!! Polka!
  • Liar’s Club
  • Starbucks
  • Centro
  • Grey’s Lake during the summer

One of the great things about downtown Des Moines is that there’s something for everyone. The East Village now has a piano bar, which is new enough most people haven’t been to it yet, tons of restaurants, and a “back from the dead” nightlife! You can see concerts, and even your occasional celebrity now that the election season is in full swing.

If you’ve written downtown off of your list of places to have fun–it’s time to return and see how much change has taken place. If you’re not careful, you may end up enjoying yourself!

By the way!!! Zen Noodle and Sushi Bar in the Kirkwood just opened today!! Had the “Spider” rolls….oh my….heaven wrapped in rice and seaweed paper. MMMMMM! They have truly done a fantastic job remodeling the old Kirkwood cafe. Who would believe that old lovable cafe is now the home of a Japanese Sushi Bar? Oh but it is so awesome! They are open for lunch 11 am - 2 pm and then for dinner at 5 pm. I highly recommend them!

When I’m downtown I enjoy eating at the Palmer’s deli–they have great Reuben sandwiches. On the other hand, there are so many places which have Reubens that I want to try (such as Winston’s and Sally’s) I have to be careful lest I lose control of my diet.
