East Village Coming Soon And Closing Soon
Did you like the Village Market? I’ve got some bad news.
The neighborhood grocery store in the East Village is closing after a short six-month stint.
“It’s a very sad day,” said Brian Borchardt, of the Village Market at 325 E. Fifth St. “There’s just not enough traffic coming into the store. We’re probably ahead of our time here.”
The 2,000-square-foot grocery store opened in early April, but failed to catch on with neighboring residents and workers in the area, he said.

And now on to better news. Do you read? Have you been one of the many wanting a new bookstore downtown?
East Village Books, 510 E. Locust. St., throws its doors open at 5 p.m. Friday. Its inauguration features a reception for former Iowan Loretta Elsworth, author of the young adult book, “In Search of Mockingbird,” at 6 p.m., followed by her reading from her book at 6:30 p.m. and a book signing after that.
East Village Books is a full-line bookstore with new titles, classics, local and regional authors, childrens books, music CDs and consigned art from 11 local artists.

And those looking for a new place to eat will enjoy this morsel.
Another restaurant is under construction in the East Village. Alba, on the corner of East Sixth and Des Moines streets, is expected to open by the end of the year, possibly even by late November.
Owner Jason Simon said the menu will offer American cuisine. Simon is a Des Moines native who has cooked in restaurants in Portland, Ore., New Orleans – he was there when Katrina hit – and Cleveland, Ohio.

Joel Taylor Says:
East Village Market didnt make it because they did not stock common items that a person would be looking for in that area. Too much wine and high-end items, too few common and low-end items.

I love when a biz goes out of biz its always everyones fault but the biz owner. Give me a break, that store had a small lunch meat area, wine area, and a few crappy items. Next time find another store that works in a similar area in a similar city, and see what works for them. Don’t assume you know whats going on. Also did they have anything that really made them a part of the community and made if fun to go in? I went in once, and that was it.

Of the 3 downtown stores I’ve always thought going in that Gateway Market had the best plan, but the customer service at Riverbend really stands out.
I haven’t had anyone tell me anything about Village Market that stood out, maybe that was the problem?
