Geneaology At The State Historical Building And Lunch At Baratta’s
By Jo Hill

Well, we went back to the Historical Building, but this time we decided to visit the Genealogical Department.

Anyone interested in Family history will enjoy a trip there. As we looked for information on our families we looked around and saw several people working there. One was doing research on Iowa Senates, another upgrading books from Dewey Decimal system to the Library of Congress system. Still others were helping new comers and those of us that have no idea where to start.
Everyone was most helpful and pleasant, and I even found a book I had thought was lost. Yes, I am interested in family history, and the historical building was where I found my first “find”. I was lucky to find a tiny little book that told the story of my family back to the Revolutionary War. That hooked me on genealogy for a long time.
Research can such hard work you need to rebuild your energy, and where better then heading for the third floor and having lunch at Baratta’s. The lunch was excellent and as was the service.

Several diners took advantage of the great weather and ate on the patio. I think part of appeal of Baratta’s is the view from the patio. The patio over looks skylights and a lower patio area and that is beautiful, but the best of all is the view of the Capital building and the new park. I think this is the best place yet to see the Capital.

Even if you think Family History is silly, drop into the Historical Building for lunch. It’s sure to be a treat.
