King Ying Low

By Jo Hill

What? A small business in downtown Des Moines for a hundred years? And in the small location for about sixty years? With all the new businesses and places being being redone and rebuilt, I hadn’t thought any restaurant had been around that long, but King Ying Low has. It was started in 1907, and moved to it’s present location in the 1940’s.

One of my closest friends and I would get together every few months and come
downtown and eat at King Ling Lows. That has to be 20-25 years ago, but it was like
stepping back in time to walk into this place. Much of the decor was the same as it was years ago. The usual red decor, and pictures of cranes brought back many memories. It was one of our favorite places to eat back then. I loved their Egg Foo Young, and discovered Oolong tea, which is still my favorite.

Again today, I had Egg Foo Young and found it delicious and more then I could eat.
My granddaughter had a beef dish, and enjoyed it also. Yes, we took home the cute little Chinese Food boxes. Service was good, and we plan to return soon.

Are there other places downtown that have been serving people for that long? So
many places that were there for years have left, but King Ling Lows hangs in there.
If you like Chinese food, you might want to try it. We were pleased we did.

I have never seen that place before, I guess downtown has a lot of things I still have to checkout. Thanks for the update jo!

This is so cool and informative; who would
imagine a 60 yr. old Chinese restaurant in
downtown. I hope Jo Hill reviews more of her
unusual haunts with her great photos and strait
from the hip reviews. She is a great “eye” for
    D.M.!!
