Mulberry Lofts

The old Harger and Blish (from 1887) Building has recently undergone a conversion to lofts, and is now known as Mulberry Lofts.  I had the great opportunity to view these lofts last week with BJ Knapp and found them to be very well done.

The overall feel of the building was left in tact.  The developers did a really good job of keeping the “old” feel of the building, and bringing in new to places like the kitchen and bathrooms.  It’s kind of hard to explain, but they reallly pulled it off.  Unlike Whiteline, where everything is brand new, Mulberry Lofts has exposed brick, lots of exposed concrete that shows it’s age and has much more personality.

I went through the model unit, which is all of 667 sq ft.  I don’t know how they did it, but the unit feels more than twice that size.  I’d been in a 700 sq ft loft at Brown Camp, a few 750 sq ft or so lofts at Whiteline, a 850 sq ft loft at 10th Street Lofts, and all felt much smaller than the loft at Mulberry.

PROS:

Building’s age adds tons of character to each unit.

True loft feel with tall ceilings, exposed ductwork, concrete and brick.

Excellent location in the Western Gateway.

CONS:

Only outdoor parking available.

Some units have “not great” views.

Association fees do not include cable, internet, heat/electric like some other projects do.

The Mulberry Lofts make a great addition to the downtown lifestyle, and having so much of the building already sold I think lots of people have already found out.

700 Sq ft? Geez my garage is bigger then those units. That building is cool to look at. I like it better then those 111 city lofts where you have a green building next to a fire station.

    Thomas,

Not everyone in Des Moines is looking to live in the suburbs. 700 sq ft is plenty of room for two people. Lots of us care about the enviroment and want to reduce our impact on greenhouse gasses to help with global warming.

    Hey jewels, Im with you.

Im on Al Gores Team. Infact I drove my hummer to go see his movie, An Inconvenient Truth.
I was kept his message close to my heart until this winter when its the coldest I have ever remembered. Geez, I wish we did have some global warming to melt some of this snow off my BBQ grill.
