Must Read Des Moines Register Article
This article is a must read if you have missed it. Should we add more green space, and walking areas between downtown and Sherman Hill?
The path along MLK is wonderful, but it doesn’t connect anything to anywhere. It’s just nice looking. I think we do need to connect Sherman Hill to downtown, especially with the Western Gateway Park. Here’s the article, be sure to read it and let your opinion be heard!

Well, I read the article and found it to be absolutely wonderful and brilliant! Jack Porter and Bob Mickle are truly men to admire for all of their blood, sweat, tears and love they have put into that precious and beautiful historic neighborhood. They have fought so hard to preserve that neighborhood, our oldest neighborhood in Des Moines. Our roots as a city go back there and we need to take careful measure to preserve it. It is our history, our precious history that once it is removed or destroyed, it is gone forever. I am personally one who will do anything help and support any type of improvements to our urban neighborhoods. They are rich with history, culture and diversity.
But to my dismay - I read the comments from the readers below and the ignorance of individuals in our city never ceases to amaze me! “Stay in your cars because these neighborhoods are too dangerous”? WOW - I see that majority of these folks have not crossed the borders of their little suburbans towns for oh…..some 10+ years! Yikes!

I saw the comments too, although I find the humor in them I guess. Downtown and Sherman Hill are far too rich in culture and history to be for everyone.
After all, the sign that you’ve made it in Des Moines is to move into a cookie cutter home in Clive. Haha!
I do think the green space would be great, and as I wrote about a few months ago, I am blown away with how far Sherman Hill has come since I was a kid going to school at Edmunds. They’ve done a great job.
