NCAA Women’s Tourney Coming To Des Moines

If you read your copy of the Des Moines Register today I’m sure you noticed that a h-u-g-e event is coming to the Wells Fargo Arena next year.  Women’s March Madness!  What, you missed this one?  Here’s your link.

Now I’ll be the first to tell you that women’s basketball is hardly the most exciting event one can attend.  In fact, unless you’re rooting for your team, it’s pretty much unbearable to watch.  (I know, I know, not a PC statement)  But, I do agree that this could be a huge event for Des Moines to land, and here’s why.

Remember when the first PGA event came to DMGCC?  I think it was the Senior PGA Open, back in the late 90’s.  It was frickin huge, and the great turnout resulted in Des Moines landing several golf tournaments, for both men and women’s golf, each summer.

Fast forward to this event.  Must like a Senior PGA event can’t be the biggest ticket in town, the Women’s NCAA 1st and 2nd round tourney’s aren’t going to be the biggest draw either.  (save for an ISU, Drake, UNI or that other team out east appearing in this region)  If Des Moines fans really turn out I do think you’ll see more events here in Des Moines.  I mean come on, if we can churn out fans for that–what would the turnout be for something good?

I could be off base here, what do you think?

    Hi Josh,

“Now I’ll be the first to tell you that women’s basketball is hardly the most exciting event one can attend.”

I’m smiling because women’s basketball is the sport I love to watch most of all. I wasn’t a fan until 14 years ago. Now I’ve been to various tournaments and two final fours. In fact, I attended 9 games in 4 days during the MVC tournament at Knapp Center.

I missed this announcement. Glad to hear they are coming to Des Moines. I hope the fans rally because it’s the beginning of bringing a lot of entertainment to our town!

If it’s been awhile since you attended a game, you might want to try again. Usually the game is action-packed - oh, there’s always a game that’s not that exciting, but for the most part, it’s great fun.

So-o-o-o excited! Finally! If Drake and Iowa State make it that far it will be more than I can probably stand. Great blog, great news. Thanks, JOsh.
