Open Houses Saturday
I’m sure you know by now that the downtown Des Moines farmer’s market is awesome. It’s a fact, not up for debate!
On the first Saturday of each month they have open houses at several downtown properties as well. This is my heads up to you–check it out!
Properties to be open are:
- The Kirkwood
- Brownstones on Grand
- Hubbell Tower
- 418 Liberty
- East Village Court
- Whiteline Lofts
- Olive Street Condos
- 111 City Lofts

hmmmm…I would debate that there’s NOTHING awesome about the Farmers Market. In fact, it seems to have little to do with farmers at all. It’s thousands of mostly overweight Iowans crammed into the downtown, falling all over each other to buy flea market junk and fair food.
My first visit to Des Moines while considering moving here included a trip to the Farmer’s Market. It was enough to send me running. It was a horrible first impression. When I left Des Moines that weekend, I never wanted to come back. I eventually did relocate here and tried the Farmer’s Market again a couple of weeks ago convinced to make it work and even got excited about the prospect of picking up some fresh fruits and vegetables. I left in frustration about 20 minutes later. The crowds were impossible and rude. And it was impossible to get through all the junk vendors to find what I was shopping for.
They should really look at dividing it up better. They should put the vendors selling farm fresh produce and meats in one area and all the flea market junk in another. That might make things a little more accessible.
