Uncle Wendell’s BBQ & Bakery

We’ve reviewed Uncle Wendell’s here before, back when he was in Sherman Hill. Technically he’s moved from downtown, but he’s close enough if you love BBQ. I know that lots of you do because last time I had about a dozen people email me and let me know that they went to his place the next day to try it out (most didn’t know it even existed)…

The Des Moines Register has reviewed the new location and I share this with those of you that love BBQ. Trust me, it’s fantastic!

Here’s what they had to say:

Food: Garretson bakes as well as barbecues, so the bread he serves is fresh and homemade. We had the pulled-pork sandwich with a side of coleslaw. The full sandwich is piled high with pork. Half sandwiches are also available.
Fans of Carolina barbecue will appreciate that Uncle Wendell’s is one of the few places around that puts out traditional Midwest tomato-based barbecue — locally made Russ & Frank’s sauce — as well as vinegar- and mustard- based sauce.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Uncle Wendell’s menu is limited to sandwiches — pulled pork and beef brisket. A rib dinner is available on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Uncle Wendell’s also sells the bread, plate-sized cookies and Dutch letters that Garretson bakes.

Have you been? How did you enjoy the place?

I’m a fan of Uncle Wendell’s. The sandwiches are simple, tasty, and monstrous. Try the dinner plate sized cookies for desert. Mmmm, mmm. Two thumbs up.
