Uncle Wendell’s BBQ
Once again I found myself with the deep desire to test out downtown’s BBQ establishments–with you in mind of course. I feel it’s my duty to find, eat, and report back to you about what I have found.
I got the chance to visit Uncle Wendell’s BBQ, which is in Sherman Hill, right next to the new Ingersoll Square development. It’s just south of Woodland Ave. on 17th Street. The place may not look like much, but don’t let the looks fool ya, this place is good.
I wasn’t smart enough to take a picture of my sandwich, so you’ll have to take my word. It was the biggest sandwich I have ever seen. So big you can’t eat it like a sandwich, I had to use a fork.
Uncle Wendell told me that he is primarily into the catering business, which is why he’s only open from 11 AM to 2 PM Monday-Friday.
When I was there you could order smoked beef brisket, or smoked pork. I have heard rumors that Friday is baby back rib day, but I have yet to confirm that. Maybe I’ll have to try it again Friday! There is also a bakery here, and one of the patrons that came in told me that Uncle Wendell makes the best bread in town. I didn’t buy a loaf, but the bread on my brisket sandwich was great.
I would highly recommend Uncle Wendell’s BBQ. Fantastic brisket, the biggest sandwich you’ve ever seen, and a price tag that made me wonder if he’s turning a profit!
